Cloud Forests & Beautiful Landscapes of Mombacho Volcano

Nicaragua

Discover the mysteries and all the beauty that makes this ancient volcano a very special and unique place that deserves to be protected.

Upon exploring the trails of Mombacho Volcano, you will get to know the rare plants and other natural phenomena unique to this magical place.

Some contend that the volcanic material hurled out by Mombacho's volcanic eruption over 20,000 years ago created the islands that today can be seen at the base of the volcano in Lake Nicaragua.

Experts believe that Mombacho was a formidable volcano of some 2000 meters (6,500 ft.), before the eruptions demolished the peak.

Just 30 minutes from Granada, the trails of Mombacho are shrouded in cloud forest. In the struggle for space and light within the forest, the plants have discovered that it's more beneficial to live on the other plants than to live on the ground. Thus in the heights of the trees, these epiphytes establish themselves and create a diverse garden. Many lichens, ferns, vines, lianas and orchids and other epiphytes thrive in this environment.

Join us for a day exploring the plants and cloud forests of Mombacho Volcano!
